The Top 5 Home Security System Components

Filed under: Security Portal — admin @ 11:44 am

Advancing technology is making more and more sophisticated home security equipment available to the average person to help them keep their home and family safe and secure. There are a lot of choices to make when setting up a good home security system plan, and here are some of the top security system components that should be considered as you do:

1. Having a basic alarm system that is triggered when someone opens an outside door or window is a great start, but there are ways for experienced burglars to get around such a system. So a very good secondary line of defense in case of a break-in is having motion detectors installed in every room of the home. They can be located in one of the ceiling corners so they are not obtrusive and can have a good view of the entire room. If you are way from home, these are great tools to detect a home intrusion because of the motion inside the house and sound the alarm as needed.

2. Alarm system monitoring services are another significant upgrade to the standard home alarm system. A monitoring service will be connected to your alarm by phone line and if the alarm is triggered they will first attempt to contact you as the homeowner on a predetermined phone number to be sure that the alarm has not been accidentally set off. If they cannot get you they call the local law enforcement to investigate the situation.

3. Adding video cameras to your home alarm system is another great upgrade that can keep you well-informed on all that is going on outside your home at all times. Surveillance video cameras have become so small and durable that they can now be placed outside the home at the most important spots and even be equipped with motion detectors that will sense when movement is taking place in it’s protected area. It can then notify you if you are home or just turn on a video recorder to capture the activity if you are absent.

4. A home safe is another valuable home security component. If for some reason thieves do manage to get past all of your security system defenses, a home safe can thwart all their efforts. Burglars do not want to spend a lot of time inside a home as every minute that they are inside increases the possibility that they can be detected and apprehended for their crime. A well placed and solidly installed home safe makes all the hard work and effort that they will have to go through to get into it much harder to justify, and so often prevents the theft of your most valuable possessions.

5. Including other monitoring systems along with your home security system can be very valuable for peace of mind too. Often companies can hook in a fire alarm system to the main alarm too, and if the fire alarm is triggered the appropriate fire station will be notified. Personal and medical alarms can be integrated this way too and that can be especially valuable for those with severe health problems and the elderly who live alone.

Considering these home security components when you either buy or upgrade your existing home security system can enhance your overall home security plans.

30 Dos for Gymnasts’ Parents

Filed under: Sports + Movement — admin @ 4:50 am

Parents sometimes wonder what they can do to help improve their gymnast’s success and enjoyment of the sport of gymnastics. Here are 30 things that can help enhance your gymnast’s experience of the sport:

1. Do concentrate on your gymnast’s individual progress as the best measure of their gymnastics success.

2. Do emphasize to your gymnast that gymnastics should be fun.

3. Do provide your gymnast with all of the financial and moral support they need.

4. Do get your gymnast to practice and meets on time.

5. Do praise and give regular doses of positive feedback to your gymnast.

6. Do participate fully in any and all fundraising efforts, as this will inevitably improve your own gymnast’s experience in the sport.

7. Do show an active interest in your gymnast’s participation in the sport.

8. Do leave the coaching to the gymnastics professionals.

9. Do support the gym and coaches in any way you can.

10. Do communicate with your gymnast’s coaches about your gymnast’s goals and progress.

11. Do inform your gymnast’s coaches about any relevant issues happening at home that might affect your gymnast at practice or in competition.

12. Do provide moral support for your gymnast.

13. Do provide emotional guidance for your gymnast.

14. Do learn as much as possible about gymnastics so you can communicate with and understand your gymnast and what they are going through.

15. Do make allies with the gym owner and your gymnast’s coaches.

16. Do maintain a positive attitude about your gymnast and their participation in gymnastics.

17. Do understand the inherent difficulty in winning at gymnastics meets. There can be up to 120 competitors at a meet and only three medals awarded in each event.

18. Do help give your gymnast a healthy perspective on their success or lack of it in the sport.

19. Do allow yourself to get pleasure from your gymnast’s participation in gymnastics, but do not get overly emotionally involved.

20. Do enjoy yourself and let your gymnast enjoy gym meet trips.

21. Be relaxed, calm, and positive when watching your child practice or compete. Your positive attitude can improve how well your child performs and how they feel about their gymnastics.

22. Do have or get a life of your own outside of your gymnast’s participation in gymnastics.

23. Do make friends with other parents at the gym and at meets. They are the only ones who will understand what you and your gymnast go through.

24. Do socialize and allow your gymnast to socialize at meets to make the event more fun for them and you.

25. Do work with other parents to ensure that all gymnasts can enjoy the sport and competitions.

26. Do volunteer and help as much as you can at the gym. The level of your gymnast’s gymnastics experience depends in large part on the time and energy you and other parents donate to the program.

27. Do recognize your gymnast’s accomplishments.

28. Do show your gymnast unconditional love and make sure they know you love them whether they win or lose or fall.

29. Do be a positive role model for your gymnast in terms of good sportsmanship.

30. Do keep a perspective and sense of humor about your gymnast’s participation in the sport. You both will enjoy it more that way.

Article Marketing Benefit - Surges in Web Traffic Over and Over Again From Article Writing

Filed under: Publishing Stuff — admin @ 10:39 pm

Writing dozens, hundreds or even thousands of articles and making them available for distribution is one of the best ways to ensure that your website gets surges in traffic over the long-haul. Why? Let me explain:

When you put your articles into distribution (meaning you submit them to ezine publishers and the article sites that ezine publishers visit for fresh content), you increase your chances of your article getting picked up as supplemental content by ezine publishers. They take your article and send it to their email newsletter membership or add it to their website.

Why would you give them your article for free? Heck, you’re a paid expert, right?

The answer is because good ezine publishers will leave your article in tact and provide you with an active link back to your website. When they send your article to their list, you can expect an immediate surge in traffic. Most of the time, you won’t know who sent your article to their list, but you will see spikes throughout the year if your articles are quality.

There is another technical reason that you may get surges in web traffic from your articles: Every time your article is reprinted on a website with an active link to your website, your articles help you increase link popularity which may elevate your rank with the major search engines. More rank means more natural traffic to your site.

Having worked with thousands of article authors and tens of thousands of articles, I can tell you that there are clearly two types of ezine articles:

Ezine Articles Type I - Designed for mass distribution:

How can you setup your article to be picked up by the largest number of potential ezine publishers? Easy: Write 250-500 word articles that are easy to read, bullet points and lists, and only 1 or 2 links in the resource box below the article (and never more than 2). You also don’t want to pitch affiliate programs with your links as ezine publishers frown on this and won’t pick up your article. Lastly, don’t lace your article with heavy HTML code or HTML tables or anything complex. Lowest common denominator (plain text) rules.

Bottom line: The easier you make it for ezine publishers to use your article, the higher your distribution rate. Your goal is increased distribution and exposure.

Ezine Articles Type II - Designed for value only from originating site.

How can you limit distribution and only get value from the article directories that you submit your articles to? Easy: Include anchor text links instead of full http:// URL’s and bloat it up with HTML garbage and cute HTML code that adds value to the article but would make any ezine publisher cringe because they can’t work your heavy article into their ezine template.

As you can guess, I favor “Ezine Articles Type I” authors as they really “get it.” Type II article authors are missing out on the viral nature of article distribution.

Tip: If you’re going to be a “Type II” article author, at least include one http:// URL in your resource box instead of only anchored text links. This way your article will still generate an active link for ezine publishers who might use your article to their text-based email newsletter audience.

Crank Up The Traffic:

Don’t be a 1-trick article author and only post 1 article to 1 site and then call it a day. If you want to crank up the traffic, you’ve got to crank up the quantity of quality articles you put into distribution. Only the rare article author hits the jackpot with tens or hundreds of thousands of views to their article while the greater majority needs tens, hundreds or even thousands of articles to do the same traffic.

Set a goal to write 4 articles at a time, 250-500 words each and submit them to ezine publishers from your core niche along with submitting them to websites that archive fresh ezine articles daily. It is possible to crank out 100-500 new articles per year for most authors in their spare time. Those who say it’s impossible are usually passed up by those of us who know it’s possible.

There is no doubt that there is an article writing labor investment here, but the payoffs are in surges in traffic to your website this year many years to come without having to buy the traffic. Consider it an investment in building your websites’s foundational traffic-future. :-)

A Classic Toy For The Ages

Filed under: Lifestyle Parlor — admin @ 1:26 pm

Throughout the years the toy market has seen many toys come and go but few have the staying power and the unique history of the Teddy Bear. Let’s explore this unique story of this classic toy and a piece of American heritage.

It was November 1902 and our president at the time, Theodore Roosevelt went on a hunting excursion to Mississippi. The trip was business and pleasure: He was there to try to settle a boundary dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana and a hunting excursion for the president, who loved the sport.

But on that particular day, the hunt did not go as planned as President Roosevelt could not find a suitable target to his liking. However, his staff, in an effort to accommodate him, somehow managed to capture a Louisiana black bear cub for him to shoot and tied it to a tree. The thought of shooting a baby bear tied to a tree did not seem sporting to the accomplished outdoorsman and he refused, instead sparing the life of the black bear cub and setting it free.

Mr. Clifford Berryman, a famous political cartoonist for the Washington Star at the time, drew a cartoon titled, “Drawing The Line In Mississippi”, depicting the President letting the bear live, and using the story as a metaphor as for how the president dealt with the boundary dispute.

The cartoon also showed the President with his rifle and his back turned on the cute, cowering, baby bear. This gave Brooklyn toy store owner, Morris Michtom the inspiration for a display for his shop.

He placed a copy of the newspaper cartoon next to a hand-sewn stuffed bear his wife made in the window of his store. To his surprise, he was inundated with customers eager to buy his stuffed bear!

Michtom quickly requested and received President Theodore Roosevelt’s permission to use his name for the stuffed bears that he and his wife were now selling. Thus the “teddy bear” was born, and soon Michtom was producing the bears by the thousands. With the profits from the sales of the teddy bears Michtom went on to form the Ideal Toy Company.

Teddy bears continue to be best friends to children of all ages all over the world. Their mass appeal will never go out of style and they are a true classic to, albeit, with a little presidential help.

Selecting The Right Type of Stroller For Your Lifestyle

Filed under: Kids — admin @ 7:39 am

Having a baby is exciting, but also very tough! There are tons of decisions you will make throughout your pregnancy, throughout your babies infancy and during their entire lives! One of those early decisions you will have to make is what type of stroller to by your precious baby. In case you weren’t aware, a stroller is a must have item for all new parents! Most parents buy their first stroller before they even buy a crib for their newborn. You can use your stroller from day one!

It’s easy to get wound up over the selection process. Fortunately if you use the tips below for selecting the right type of stroller, you won’t have any trouble at all selecting the right stroller! Here are some important considerations when buying a stroller for your baby.

Selecting a Style
There are many different ’styles’ of stroller. Here are just a few:

  • Conventional stroller - this is your standard stroller. Most come with a harness or belt to keep your baby safe and secure, a snack tray, maybe a cup holder, foot brakes and removable padding to keep your baby comfortable. A conventional stroller may range in price from $30-$300 or more.
  • Tandem or double - if you are having twins or have two babies close in age, a double stroller may be your best bet. You can buy a side-by-side version or a front to back version. While bulky, these strollers do come in handy when shuffling around your little ones.
  • Exercise or Jogging - these strollers are increasingly popular in recent years. While many are more expensive than traditional models, most parents feel the added investment is well worth it. Most exercise strollers come with a durable aluminum frame. They can carry your toddler up to 80 pounds, twice as much as conventional strollers. Exercise strollers usually easily fold like any other model. They are a good selection for parents on the go who want to get fit while entertaining their child.
  • Lightweight - lightweight strollers feature lightweight materials. Most weigh less than 20 pounds. Most average 12-15. This is a bonus especially if you plan to haul around a hefty 30-pound toddler. Remember the heavier your stroller the more weight you’ll push around. A lightweight stroller makes quick trips to the grocery store a lot easier. Some families opt to have a lightweight and a conventional stroller in the house. They can use the lightweight stroller for traveling and the conventional stroller for walks around the block.
  • The first thing you should do when hunting for a stroller is decide what style best meets your needs. Once you do this, you can start looking for a stroller that has the unique features and accessories you feel make the package complete.

    Stroller Accessories and Features
Once you decide the style of stroller you need, it’s time to select accessories and features. Some strollers come fully loaded with accessories and features. You may pay a little extra, but you won’t have to buy these features separately. Here are just a few accessories and features that most parents find useful when buying a stroller:

    • Extra cup and snack holders for parent and child.
    • Weatherproof fabric.
    • Additional rain or insect mesh shield.
    • Adjustable canopy to keep sunlight away from your child regardless of the direction you turn.
    • Reflective materials to keep you visible when walking during dusk or in the evening.
    • Foot and hand brakes.
    • Built in shock absorbers.
    • Built in toys to entertain your child.

One feature you can’t live without is an adequate harness. Look for a stroller with a three or five point harness to keep your infant safe and secure while riding. You should always belt your child when riding, even when they are an infant, to make sure they don’t accidentally slip out of the stroller and hurt themselves.

Before shopping for your stroller, create a list of the key features and the style of stroller you plan to buy. This will help reduce your list of 500 strollers to perhaps 20. Once you have narrowed your list you can look at dozens of online reviews to select the perfect stroller for you and your family.

Spy Software vs Parental Controls

Over the past years, I’ve heard many things on the television
about people cheating on their spouse over the internet, kids
giving away private information to people they hardly even know.
While there may be a few crude ways of dealing with this issue
(such as taking away the pc, closing your internet access
account).

I suggest trying to find other ways to resolve the issue (such
as spy software). When it comes to kids, of course you set your
rules for the internet use and utilizing your parental controls
to keep them from naughty sites they shouldn’t view. Though how
can you parentally block them from chatting with friends and
*others online?

In most cases no matter what rule you create, children are
likely to try and test those rules. Rules such as: no chatting
with strangers, or giving out personal information on the
internet and many more things. Not to mention many kids have a
habit of being friends with those which want them to do many
things they’d normally not do(in other words those which are bad
influence).

You hear things like kids using the internet to meet people, and
they get abducted, etc. Spouses using the internet, secretly
cheating on their wives/husbands. You hear it often on the news.
So as Parental Controls may be able to block sites, it wont yet
do enough for you. Though, there is a way to have the advantage
over what your kids (teens included), and spouse try to pull off
behind your back (online at least) .

Using spy software can give you the edge to view many, many
things typed out on the pc, and with some spy softwares, you can
even have pictures (snap shots) of exactly what they were doing
that you have accused them of. This means you could find out
quite a few things. Here is some things you might use it for.

1. To find out if your spouse is cheating on you via the
internet.

2. Know what your kids of all ages are doing on the internet.

(Making sure they follow your rules to stay away from bad sites)

3. Know what your kids chat about on the internet, as well as
any secret plans of theirs.

4. Know if your spouse is visiting some sites you’d prefer
he/she not.

There are quite a few things it can help with. Though, those are
a few examples. There are many more things you can do with spy
software. Many I may never even think up. Who knows, maybe you’d
like it, just to find out what interests your kids and spouse,
so you can surprise them with a great present this holiday!

I know there are quite a few spy software programs out there now
of days. So I’ve broken it down to a small list of 2 softwares I
prefer most.

You can see all the details and reviews at:
http://www.spysoftware1.com .

There you will find spy software at the best price, along with
the most useful tools that come with them. Don’t forget to
bookmark it if you’d like to view it later.

Practical Aromatherapy - Antiviral Effects of Essential Oils

Filed under: Meds + Medicine — admin @ 3:34 pm

The body of evidence regarding the effectiveness of natural botanicals against a great variety of viruses is growing. Over twenty years ago, German scientists found extracts of more than 100 species of the Lamiaceae family to have antiviral effects. This discovery lead to and increase in the examination of essential oils in Europe for the treatment of viral infections.

Essential oils from many plant families have now been demonstrated to have antiviral properties. Interestingly, different plant families exhibit varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the virus strain. This is due to the particular molecular structures found in each type of oil, which penetrate physical entities to varying degrees (different tissues, cell walls, mucous membranes, etc). The effect on each virus strain depends also on the virus structure (enveloped, non-enveloped, molecular symmetry, etc.)

Certainly, one of the reasons for oils’ effectiveness en vivo is their lipophillic character - essential oils are easily absorbed into mammalian tissues, where they may produce the greatest results. In fact, when studying the anti-viral effects of essential oils, researchers found that normal cells seemed to acquire a special resistance to viral penetration, though the mechanism for this effect is not yet known.

Melissa and the Herpes Virus

One of the Lamiaceae plants studied, Melissa (Melissa officinalis - also known as Lemon Balm), was shown particularly efficacious against the herpes virus (HSV). Doctor Dietrich Wabner, a professor at the Technical University of Munich, has even reported that a one-time application of Melissa oil led to a complete remission of HSV lesions. A cream medication for Herpes outbreaks, who’s active ingredient is an extract of Melissa, is now sold in Germany under the name Lomaherpan. Use of Melissa essential oil itself may be just as effective - the oil can be applied directly to the lesions (or diluted to 10% in carrier if sensitivity is noted) to speed healing. Further occurrences can be prevented by applying oil to the area when sensations signal an eminent outbreak - repeating this protocol 3 or 4 times may cause total remission.

Other essential oils found effective against the Herpes virus include bergamot, eucalyptus, lemongrass and tea tree.

Antiviral Components of Oils

The list of essential oils exhibiting antiviral effects is extensive: Melissa (as above), tea tree, juniper, eucalyptus, thyme, palmarosa, lavender, rosemary, clove, laurel, cinnamon bark, anise, rose, lemongrass, geranium, neroli, bergamot, clary sage, and dill. The antiviral effect of an essential oil is due to particular components of the oil - some oils will work just as effectively on a particular infection as another, because they contain similar amounts of a certain component. The components of essential oils showing antiviral activity, and the oils in which they can be found, are as follows (from K. Schnaubelt, Ph.D. - Advanced Aromatherapy, p. 36):

Anethol - found in Anise

Alpha-Sabines - found in Tea Tree, Laurel, and other oils

Beta-Caryophyllene - found in Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme Linalool, and other oils

Carvone - found in Dill

Cinnamic aldehyde - found in Cinnamon Bark

Citral - found in Melissa, Lemongrass and other oils

Citronellol - found in Rose and Geranium

Eugenol - found in Clove

Gamma-Terpinene - Found in Juniper, Eucalyptus, Niaouli, Tea Tree and other oils

Linalol - found in Lavender and Neroli

Linalyl acetate - found in Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot and other oils

Limited In-Vivo Data

Good studies of application of these essential oils in cases of illness are difficult to come by, as infecting people with viruses in the laboratory to subsequently be treated with aromatics would be a difficult process at best. The oils and components above have mostly shown effectivenessin-vitro, though tests also indicate that the anti-viral effect should occur in-vivo as well. As with Melissa, it has been HSV that has been most thoroughly examined, because of the relative simplicity of doing so. But there is nothing particularly special about the herpes virus, and proper oil/pathogen paring should prove as effective.

There are some noted case studies by professional aromatherapists. Of importance in these studies is the oil/symptom relationship. Essential oils from plants of the Myrtaceae family - notably Eucalyptus Radiata and Tea Tree - and Ravensara (also high in Eucalyptol) seem to have helped in cases with respiratory symptoms. For the lower respiratory tract, Hyssop decumbens (from the same plant family as Melissa) has been of interest. Essential oils for such cases may be used either in a diffuser, being taken at regular intervals, or through massage, diluted in a carrier oil.

Conclusion

Because of the difficulty in many cases of illness in determining the exact virus type involved, more specific application cannot be given. Certainly, in cases of HSV, Melissa has been shown effective in a number of studies. For respiratory infections, Eucalyptus and Ravensara have been used with success, and can be safely used as an adjunct to regular medical care. These oils may support one’s recovery on a physiologic level - essential oils also play a part in uplifting emotions, which may also speed healing, or at least improve mental outlook during the healing process. For such instances, one may simply find the essential oil or combination that one finds pleasant, calming, and/or uplifting. PLEASE NOTE: In no cases, however, should self-treatment with essential oils be used in place of professional medical care where signs/symptoms of infectious illness are present.

The Joys and Profits of Deltiology (Collecting Post Cards)

Filed under: Sports + Movement — admin @ 6:55 am

I’vde always loved postcards. At first, I was interested in the messages. Postcards provide an incomparable glimpse into the society during the period they were used. Some messages were funny, some sad, and some just plain strange. One, showing a donkey on the front read, “When are going stop being an a** and write to me?” Another, “This is a photo of the town. The place I marked with an X is where a father and his two sons were killed when a train stuck their haywagon. We’re holding a memorial service on Wednesday.” The strangest one I ever read was: “Ellen thinks you’re a lobster. I think you’re cute. Doris.” It sounds to me as if Doris had an interest in the recipient. What she meant about him being a lobster, I don’t know.

I also loved the images. Postcards were in some cases minitaure photographs of a bygone era. Real photo postcards can be found showing town streets, families, motorcycles, circuses, deep-sea diving equipment, nudes and just about any other topic you can imagine, including lynchings. I once purchased a horrendous collection of six cards that showed scenes of the 1916 genocide of Armenians in Palestine, including one with soldiers showing off the heads of three of their victims. Fortunately, most cards deal with happier topics.

Non-real-photo cards abound and show can show just about anything.

Pretty women are a common topic and are very collectible. Some artists such as Beaulieu and F. Earle Christie, are extremely popular and can bring in the hundreds of dollars.

Holidays were by far the most popluar subjects and literally millions of Christmas postcards can still be found. Most are of little value, but Santa Clauses are always collectible. Find one in a yellow or green suit and you have a minor treasure. Ones that have been manufactured to light up when viewed are known as hold-to-light or HTLs. Most of these are very collectible and some are worth in the hundreds of dollars. If you ever find a HTL with Uncle Sam as Santa, you have one that is worth in the thousands of dollars. Easter is probably the least-favored topic. The most favored by far is Halloween.

Halloween cards were popular at the time they were sent. Collectors avidly put them aside, and for this reason, a large number of the cards are still available. Today, the creme de la creme of the Halloween card are the ones by the Winsch Brothers of Germany. The quality of the cards and beauty of the designs have always made them popular. Today, they are worth in the hundreds of dollars in top condition.

So far we haven’t mentioned condition. As with all collectibles, condition is the main concern besides content. Tears, missing corners, creases, any of these can reduce a valuable card to next to nothing. I have seen more rare cards with these problems than I care to think of. Anyone interested in collecting cards must keep condition in mind at all times.

Fads can affect price, too. At one time, real photo postcards were considered so undesirable that a purchaser would pull them out and discard them as worthless. Now they are among the most valuable. In the early 1900s, cards showing flowers or woodland scenes were the desired one. They were also the most common. During the heyday of the postcard, more than a billion were delivered in a single year. Today, woodland scenes and flowers are worth next to nothing. The despised real photos showing main street will always bring at least five dollars in good condition. Long sets showing carnivals or circuses are worth in the thousands.

If you are starting a postcard collection, go after the ones that you have an interest in. If you live in a particular neighborhood in a city, you can usually find cards to collect. Nearly every important building in every city has been photographed and made into a card at one time or another. If you have a hobby, look for cards dealing with Chess or gardening, or whatever else your fancy. If you have no idea where to begin, eBay or a local postcard show are your best bets. You will get an idea of prices and what’s available. Plus you’ll meet some great people while you’re at it.
